Security in the Black Sea Region: Time to Act Decisively

On 5th December, in Rome, Italy, the conference titled “Beyond Borders: Shaping the Future of Security in the Black Sea Region” was held. Lesia Ogryzko, Director of the Sahaidachnyi Security Center, participated in a panel discussion focused on security challenges in the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions.

“Impunity observed in russia’s actions in Crimea and Donbas has created a dangerous precedent that threatens not only the stability of Europe but also that of the world,” Lesia Ogryzko stated during her speech.

“russia’s unlawful activities in the Black Sea region are multifaceted and have far-reaching global implications, despite its attempts to frame them as a localized operation in Ukraine. By restricting freedom of navigation, russia endangers global food security; by laying sea mines, it has turned them into an international threat; and through active GPS spoofing not only in the Black Sea but also in the Baltic Sea and the eastern Mediterranean, russia disrupts satellite navigation systems, affecting thousands of civilian flights worldwide.

A decisive russian military defeat in Ukraine, coupled with the liberation of Crimea, is the only path toward achieving a comprehensive, just, and enduring peace in Europe while reinforcing European security.

Similarly to the Baltic Sea, transforming the Black Sea into a “NATO lake” would significantly bolster the Alliance’s security and that of numerous non-NATO states”, added Lesia Ogryzko, Director of the Sahaidachnyi Security Center.

The conference “Beyond Borders: Shaping the Future of Security in the Black Sea Region” was organized by the Italian Digital Media Observatory (IDMO), the Embassy of Ukraine, the Federation of Humans Rights (FIDU), the Luiss Data Lab, and the Center of Geopolitics.
