Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – the course “Defense Sector. Changemakers”

We have compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions about the training course “Defense Sector. Changemakers” — the flagship program of the Sahaidachnyi Security Center, which has already become a systemic platform for developing leaders within the defense community and annually brings together those driving change in the security and defense sector.

1. What is the purpose of the course?
This is an intensive specialized course on defense, security, and warfare issues of the new generation – from military theory and NATO doctrines to wartime finance, civil-military relations, leadership issues, and analytics in the sector.

The course is updated annually in response to the needs and demands of the sector. It focuses on understanding how modern warfare operates at the level of ideas, decisions, and systems; how to communicate effectively with both military and civilian actors; and how to make high-stakes decisions in environments where no ready-made instructions exist.

2. Why is this program unique?
The course combines teaching of military logic, public administration, war economics, technology, and society with a focus on Ukraine’s experience of the full-scale war. The course focuses on community building and filling gaps in knowledge about war and public administration in the defense sector.

3. What key topics does the program cover?
Defense planning, military domains, NATO operations, military finance, procurement, innovation, civil-military relations, leadership.

Who should apply

4. Target audience
The program is at the intersection of the state, civil society, and private sectors. Participants include representatives of government agencies in the sector, leaders and key experts from civil society organizations, charitable foundations, and defense-oriented think tanks, communications specialists, military personnel, and representatives of the defense industry.

5. Is a technical or defense background required?
No. Professional interest and motivation to work on security issues are sufficient.

Format and duration

6. How long does the program last?
The program consists of 8 modules and lasts two months (may be extended).

7. How often are classes held?
Modules are held every week in the format of two-day sessions.

8. How long does each module take?
Each module lasts up to 8 hours over two days.

9. What format does the training take?
It is face-to-face training, where we combine lectures, case studies, discussions, practical tasks, and interactive sessions.

10. Can I combine the program with work?
Yes, the format is designed for working professionals.

Speakers and content

11. Who teaches the program?
Teaching is delivered by practitioners and experts in defense, public administration, military finance, and innovation; NATO professionals and practitioners, as well as specialists from leading professional and academic institutions, including the University of Oxford, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Baltic Defence College, and the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (Qatar), along with invited lecturers from the Kyiv School of Economics, Kyiv-Mohyla Business School, and Ukrainian Catholic University.

Selection and participation

12. Is there a selection process for the program and how does it work?
Yes, participation is on a competitive basis. Approximately 4 people compete for 1 place.

We invite you to fill out an application form, which includes questions about your motivation, experience, and knowledge of English. Next, if necessary, individual interviews are conducted, where we get to know each other and make a final decision about participation. Motivation and the ability to attend classes are extremely important to us.

13. How many people study in one group?
The group size is limited so participants can engage closely with the speakers.
2025 – 40 participants,
2026 – 25 participants.

14. When does enrollment open?
Enrollment is announced before the start of each cohort.

Payment and access

15. Is there a fee to participate?
No, for selected and invited participants, training costs are covered by the organizers. For us, this is an investment in the development of the participant’s professional capabilities to influence future changes in the defense sector.

Results

16. What will I receive upon completion of the program?
A more comprehensive understanding of modern warfare, the defense system, and decision-making in the security domain, as well as a certificate of participation.

17. Will the program help my career?
Yes, it is designed for people who work or plan to work in the security and defense sector, politics, management, or international relations.

No, the program is systematic and recurring.
