We have compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions about the training course “Defense Sector. Change Makers” — the flagship program of the Sahaidachnyi Security Center, which has already become a systemic platform for developing leaders within the defense community and annually brings together those driving change in the security and defense sector.
1. What is the purpose of the course?
This is an intensive, specialized course on defense, security, and next-generation warfare. It covers military theory, NATO doctrines, wartime finance, civil–military relations, cognitive security, OSINT, leadership, analytics, and advocacy within the security sector.
The course is updated annually in response to the needs and demands of the sector. It focuses on understanding how modern warfare operates at the level of ideas, decisions, and systems; how to communicate effectively with both military and civilian actors; and how to make high-stakes decisions in environments where no ready-made instructions exist.
2. Why is this program unique?
The course teaches participants to understand modern warfare at the level of ideas, decisions, and institutions, to speak a common language with both military and civilian stakeholders, and to make complex decisions. It integrates military logic, public governance, the economics of war, technology, and society, with a strong focus on Ukraine’s experience of full-scale war.
3. What key topics does the program cover?
Defense planning, NATO, hybrid warfare, military finance, procurement, innovation, civil–military relations, OSINT, cognitive warfare, leadership, and strategic communications.

4. Target audience
Civil servants, managers, policymakers, experts, analysts, communications professionals, military and civilian leaders, and heads of civil society organizations who work (or aspire to work) in the security and defense sector.
5. Is a technical or defense background required?
No. Professional interest and motivation to work in the security field are sufficient.

6. How long does the program last?
The program consists of 8 modules and lasts two months (may be extended).

Modules are held every week in the format of two-day sessions.

Each module lasts up to 8 hours over two days.
9. What format does the training take?
It is face-to-face training, where we combine lectures, case studies, discussions, practical tasks, and interactive sessions.
10. Can I combine the program with work?
Yes, the format is designed for working professionals.

Yes, the program includes international experts and practitioners, in particular specialists from the NATO Representation in Ukraine are involved in teaching.

Selection and participation
13. Is there a selection process for the program and how does it work?
Yes, participation is on a competitive basis. Approximately 4 people compete for 1 place.
We invite you to fill out an application form, which includes questions about your motivation, experience, and knowledge of English. Next, if necessary, individual interviews are conducted, where we get to know each other and make a final decision about participation. Motivation and the ability to attend classes are extremely important to us.
14. How many people study in one group?
The group size is limited so participants can engage closely with the speakers.

16. Is there a fee to participate?
No, for selected and invited participants, training costs are covered by the organizers. For us, this is an investment in the development of the participant’s professional capabilities to influence future changes in the defense sector.

A deep understanding of modern warfare, defense systems, and security solutions, as well as a certificate of participation that will promote career advancement.
