Austrian Newspaper DER STANDARD Consults Sahaidachnyi Security Center on Ukraine’s Readiness for Peace Talks and Trump’s Potential Impact on the War
The Austrian publication DER STANDARD reached out to the Sahaidachnyi Security Center (SSC) for commentary on Ukraine’s readiness for peace negotiations and the potential impact of Donald Trump’s presidency on the course of the war.
Lesia Ogryzko, Director of SSC, emphasised the global significance of the conflict:
“This war is not about territories—it is about Ukraine’s right to exist.”
She pointed out that Putin may reject any proposals from Trump, including potential territorial exchanges for peace, insisting instead on the annexation of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. In such a scenario, Ogryzko noted:
“Trump could change his rhetoric and massively arm Ukraine. This would allow Ukraine to weaken Russia to the point where real negotiations could begin.”
However, she stressed that such a shift is unlikely before 2026.
A Compromise Scenario for Ukraine’s NATO Membership?
Ogryzko also commented on a potential compromise regarding Ukraine’s accession to NATO. One of the possible scenarios proposed by President Zelenskyy, she explained, is that Ukraine could join the Alliance with a temporary exclusion of occupied territories from Article 5 protections.
If Trump were to support this approach, the Ukrainian government could begin preparing the public for such a decision as the best possible option under current conditions.
However, public sentiment remains resolute: despite massive losses, recent polls indicate that 58% of Ukrainians reject any territorial concessions, even if that means a prolonged war.
